PostSubject: More Importance to Veteran Units   Tue Sep 27, 2016 10:20 pm

Wouldn't it be nice if units could go beyond level 20, and without the insane amount of exp (it's like 20,000) it takes to go to that level?
Heroes have infinite growth. But when my swordsman reach level 20, he gets less and less important. Sure, a level 20 anything is stronger than anything, even a level 20 Dancing Sword. But, since the retinue is so little I'd like stronger units.
Also, having to spend more army points to summon units from the retinue really nullifies the usefulness of having units stronger than the others. Having to pay 2 army points to have a swordsman that can't even defeat 2 level 1 swordsmen?
Then what do I need a veteran unit for?
Also, maybe spellcaster units should have increased mana, or more mana regeneration (but maybe their spells become stronger with levels? then nah).
I hope the max level on units isn't hard-capped inside WBIII or something.

An interesting suggestion. We'll look into it.

Can the levels change dynamically? e.g. the unit max level could be 1*hero level + charisma/10. So charisma would be more useful and allow hero to have bigger generals.

I always wanted charisma to have an extra effect and this might just be it. The only issue with having unlimited unit levels is the graphics. We would run out of medals at some point.

It could have the Grandmaster title and the same medal as well, yet the stats keep improving?
Perhaps the color could change differently, like pixel by pixel, each pixel each level, ending up on some static cool one.

Stats from wiki:
   Level 20 = +5 Damage / +3 Armour & Resistance / +20 HP / +1 Speed / If Combat < 5, +1 Combat, else +2 Combat

Mana regen could have +1% every 5 levels? or something for spellcasters like mentioned by LordVandor1. Maybe health regen too so when they have a lot of HP is it not boring waiting for them to heal? Up to a certain scale like the Combat condition so it is nothing overpowered.

Yeah this is really cool. Let's have Joe figure out the stats since he's the Keeper of Balance.

This is already planned to an extent. Units should most certainly be able to go to higher levels and retinue units should be allowed to have their own skins, special selection rings (along with the hero) and even have their own skills and equipment. They'd essentially be resurrectable mini heroes which replace the Generals conversion system so that Generals can finally go back to being standard units (which some races severely need, such as the 4 Empire spellcaster Generals).

Done unit level cap in 0.8.8 (they can get to 50). Retinue and heroes also have their own selection box in the UI & heroes also have their own disc.

Great! sunny

Retinue units are going to have their own set of skills and equipment? If yes, how are you going to do it? Are they going to have an exclusive set of skills and equipment or share the same with heroes?

Thanks.

PostSubject: What about non-retinue units?   Tue Sep 12, 2017 10:23 pm

Hello, although the thread is about retinue units, I stick to its tittle.

What about different graphics for non-retinue veteran units ?

Why?

  • The reason why would be to have a better feeling of having experienced troops (whatever the cause), to catch at a glance where are your most valuable troops when reordering your formations, to quickly select your "NCOs" and "officers", and overall to offer even more diversity on screen (let's say that in these games, the troop are really homogeneous, something Battle for Middle Earth tried and changed a bit).
  • Remember (or check) Warlords IV that had 3 different sprites for each unit according to their level, Age of Empire and any strategical game that swapped sprites or added a fancy element to them when a unit is upgraded. That is doable. No need for impairing the game's flow. Checking for levels could be done every few minutes outside of the units' routine, etc.
  • Currently, only your retinue units are displayed differently on the minimap, and as said in message above, The Protectors will have them displayed differently on the battlefield as well. But what about this lucky shadow, your latest Fey reinforcements, these quest allies, that mighty summoned unit, this one general you want to retire and spare for your retinue (summoned units have a timer bar already)?

How?

  • At first (in waiting for modellers and artists to contribute), the change could be a matter of altering colours here and there.
  • Then, both colours and models could be altered, going steel, adding a baldric, a helmet, a garb, a staff, ..., up to changing size a little (ogre, giant, minotaur king!), and and changing the anim too (e.g. casting a ranged attack with a staff instead of with both hands).
  • With but one additional set of sprites, my choice would be level 4 (20 XP), current sprites being for lower levels.
  • With more set of sprites, I'd have level 3/4, 5, and 7 (10/20 XP, 40 XP, 110 XP), current sprites being for the lowest or second lowest level (some units can be more easily adorned than others: trolls are quite naked for instance, while current spriggans are fully equipped; some units could also barely change because they start already equipped: spriggans vs pikemen).

By the way, if you can catch a modeller, there's more to do! But it's another topic (revamping the units' effects (while keeping them readable), adding more complex iddle anims, adding alternate sprites for same level units (to make your army more diverse, and depending on what kind of army (chaos vs regular), upgrading all the graphics without becoming cartoonish).
